How I told my students

I wanted to wait until I was past my 12 week mark to tell my class because I did not want to risk having to tell them about miscarriage. So yesterday we had a little party to celebrate. First, when they came through the door from recess I had a huge sucker binkie in my mouth. They thought it was hilarious and were calling me a baby. Only a few of them caught on that I was having a baby not acting like one. Then my aide had made the cutest poster and brought balloons in. I read the students a few stories on having a baby, and then I had made special cupcakes with bibs, teddy bears, and rattles on top. I also gave them some sugar babies. We also took a vote on what they thought it would be a girl or a boy. It was so fun to share this experience with a bunch of 6 and 7 year olds. They were so cute. A few of them have made me pictures to show their excitement.

That is so fun to share it with your class. I told my kids at ten weeks because I was soooo sick. One of my parents gave me baby shower with my class and it was my favorite one. How fun to have you as a teacher. Are you going to quit when the baby comes?

My announcement the second time around went something like this:

I'm up in front of the class talking about time and the clock when Madison M. shouts, "Wow, your belly is sticking out. Are you pregnant?" It was all over after that.

Your way seems much more exciting and fun. The first time, my adorable room moms threw a shower with guessing games and gifts and treats. There really is nothing more exciting than that first pregnancy. Enjoy it and get ready for months of six year-old hands all over your belly!
